About Atelier

Atelier means workshop, or artists' studio. Located in Santa Cruz, California, the Atelier Gallery was opened in December 1994 by John Teply and Shae Uisna. The gallery was originally conceived both as a community gathering place for exchange of ideas and inspiration and as exhibit space for fine art. Numerous Santa Cruz area artists and groups have hung works in traditional gallery shows in the past six years. The gallery continues its involvement with the community by hosting regular classics and poetry readings and art discussions.

Atelier's exhibit space was recently renovated and is being operated by a cooperative group of local artists, including: Georgia Brown, Christine Beck, Robert Franson, Polly Hughes, Kären Johansson, Silke, and John Teply.

Atelier is also the home of the collaborative one-mile mural project, For the 7th Generation, dedicated to ocean protection. An individual artist creates a four-foot panel depicting a favorite mile of the US West Coast. When displayed together, the panels (1320 in all!) will create a one mile-long free-standing mural of the entire West Coast. These panels will be sold and the money split between the artist, the project, and environmental organizations. Everyone is welcome to participate in the mural!
